VPN

Background

In order to access certain systems at your office or your department, or common university-wide systems, a connection from a computer from within the university is in some cases, for security reasons, required. If you are traveling or working from home, you can solve this by using the Lund University common VPN service, operated by LDC.

The VPN service makes it possible to connect from virtually any computer and get assigned one of the university's IP numbers, which makes it look as if the computer connects from inside the university, and in addition encrypts the communication between your computer and the university network, which is something that is important if you connect to the university's services while travelling.

The service requires that you log in with your LUCAT username and password. If you do not know your username and password in LUCAT, please look it up first.

More info about this service can be found by visiting the following web page at LDC:

  * http://www.ldc.lu.se/tjanster/natverk/vpn

The VPN service has two different modes that have different uses, and which have a bit different requirements on the computer:

  * VPN in tunnel mode – works with any university services. However, requires that a special piece of software is installed on your computer in advance. We have made sure that this software is pre-installed on all laptops that we manage. Because this method works with all services, we recommend that you use this method, if possible.   * VPN in web mode – perhaps the easiest way to use VPN from any computer. Works from any computer, as it does not require any special software. The disadvantage is that the VPN in web mode is limited and does not work with all university services; In practice, it works only with the completely web-based services, which are very few so far.

Regardless of the VPN method you use, it is required that the computer already has a working Internet connection, either via fixed network connection via cable or a wireless network. VPN is a service that is added on top of, and that requires, a working Internet connection.

VPN in Tunnel Mode

VPN in tunnel mode makes it possible to access all university services. Therefore, it is the method that we recommend. To use this method, however, a special software is required; “FortiClient SSL VPN”. You need to install this software on your computer first. On the laptops that we manage this software is pre-installed, so if you connect from such a laptop, you can jump directly to the section How to Use below.

From a Private Computer

If you want to connect with VPN in tunnel mode from a private computer, you must first install the VPN client software, FortiClient, on your computer. What you should do depends on the operating system of your computer. At LU Support you will find instructions for several different operating systems. Please see the link in the next section.

How to Use

At LU Support there are many guides on how to connect to the VPN:

https://zero.comaround.com/sv-se/search/?key=faba1185cfc8986d32b7d2ba7d721468%23/search?contentId=630951&currentPage=1&sortBy=MostViewed

If the VPN software FortiClient is not already installed on your computer, you should first follow these instructions to install the VPN software. Then follow the instructions below. The following instructions assume that the program is already installed on the computer.

In our laptops with Windows that we manage, we have made sure the VPN software is already installed in advance, and it should then be sufficient to use the simple instructions below.

Windows 8

  1. First, make sure your computer has a working Internet connection before proceeding. VPN requires that the computer has a working Internet connection. The simplest way to check if the computer has a working Internet Connection is to launch a browser (such as Internet Explorer), and then browse to any web page, such as www.lth.se. If this works, you can proceed to the next step. If it does not work, you must first ensure that the computer can access the Internet by connecting to a network, for example to a wireless network such as Weblogon or Eduroam, before you can proceed with the instructions below.
  2. Start the “FortiClient SSL VPN” application. In Windows 8, this is easiest accomplished by pressing the Windows key and then type “VPN”.
    1. Select the “VPN-inställningar Kör först!” (you only need to do this the first time you will connect). This script adds the settings that are required the first time you use VPN.
    2. Then start the “VPN FortiClient” application.
  3. The program “FortiClient SSL VPN” starts. Make sure the following is stated in the “Server Address” field:
    connect.lu.se:443

In the fields “Username” and “Password”, please enter your Lucat username and your Lucat password respectively. Then press the “Connect” button to connect.

  4. If the Connection succeeds, the text in the field “Status” will after a few seconds change to “Connected”. You now have an IP address within the university network, and can now use university services.
  5. When finished, press the “Disconnect” button to disconnect, and then “Exit” to exit the program.

Once You are Connected

Once you are connected to VPN in tunnel mode, you'll be able to access all university services. Please see the documentation for each service for more information.

IP Address on the Department Network

When you use VPN in tunnel mode, you typically get an IP address in the vpn.lu.se series. This works well for most people's needs, and provides access to all the services mentioned above, and more.

If you instead, when connecting with VPN, need to have assigned a particular IP address in the right range for your office or your department, then this is a service that you in advance can request from Helpdesk. If you do not know if you need such a specific IP address, you probably do not need it. In most cases, an ordinary address in the vpn.lu.se series as described above will suffice, and then you will not need to do anything special.

VPN in Web Mode

With VPN in web mode, you can in some cases use some of the university's web-based services, and without any special software on your computer. Note, however, that only some of the university services are accessible via VPN in web mode.

Please follow these steps to use VPN in web mode:

  - First, make sure your computer has a working Internet connection before proceeding. - Open a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, and then visit www.lu.se. Then proceed by clicking on “Employees” and follow the link to log into VPN. Alternatively, you can right from the start enter and go to the following URL:     * www.lu.se/vpn   - You get a page where you should fill in a username and password. Enter your Lucat Lucat username and password and click “Login.”   - Succeed login now come to a new page.     * You may receive the following text in a yellow box at the top of the page: “This website wants to run the following additions: FortiClient SSL VPN Control from Fortinet Technologies. If you trust the website and the add-on and want to allow it to run, click here. .. ”       - If you get the yellow text box with the text, click on the yellow text field and then select “Run ActiveX Control”.       - You get in this case now one more warning. Check that the name of the application is correct and then confirm that you really want to run this control by pressing the “Go” button.     * You can now from this website to start using the University of web services that support the VPN in the online mode. To do this, you must start by adding the Web service that you want to use in a so-called bookmark the page by pressing the “Add” button under “Bookmarks” and fill in some details. What to fill in here varies depending on which Web service terms. See for instance instructions for the following services for information on what to fill in each bookmark:       * Primula Web   - To log out of the VPN in the online mode, click the logout icon on the top right of the web page, highlighted in red in this image:

Important

Note that using the VPN service to connect to the university system rests on the individual a serious responsibility to have adequate security on the computer to connect to from. A reasonable minimum requirement is that you have complete, up to date and uppdaterat antivirus protection that protects against viruses, Trojans and spyware. Read our instructions under virus.
