In order to access certain systems at your office or your department, or common university-wide systems, a connection from a computer from within the university is in some cases, for security reasons, required. If you are traveling or working from home, you can solve this by using the Lund University common VPN service, operated by LDC.
The VPN service makes it possible to connect from virtually any computer and get assigned one of the university's IP numbers, which makes it look as if the computer connects from inside the university, and in addition encrypts the communication between your computer and the university network, which is something that is important if you connect to the university's services while travelling.
It is required that the computer already has a working Internet connection, either via fixed network connection via cable or a wireless network. VPN is a service that is added on top of, and that requires, a working Internet connection.
Follow the instructions via this link:
Normally, all network traffic is sent through the VPN tunnel when connected. This is because the university has a number of externally hosted services (i.e. subscription services) that require an LU ip number. Therefore, the default configuration is to pass all network traffic through the VPN tunnel when VPN is active.
If you do not want this behavior, please contact LTH Support with your request, and we will help you change the VPN configuration of your computer.
When you use VPN in tunnel mode, you typically get an IP address in the
vpn.lu.se series. This works well for most people's needs, and provides access to all the services mentioned above, and more.
If you instead, when connecting with VPN, need to have assigned a particular IP address in the right range for your office or your department, then this is a service that you in advance can request from LTH Support. If you do not know if you need such a specific IP address, you probably do not need it.
Please note that by using the VPN service in order to connect to the university systems, there rests on the individual a serious responsibility to have adequate security on the computer to connect to from. A reasonable minimum requirement is that you have complete, current and up to date antivirus protection that protects against viruses, trojans and spyware. Please read our instructions under antivirus.
Guides on VPN are available at LU Support.
LDC has the responsibility for Lund University's VPN service. Therefore, it is to the LDC ServiceDesk on the phone 046-2229000 (telephone number
+46462229000 from abroad) you should turn if you have problems with the VPN service.
Operating status and any general problems with the VPN service are normally reported at the LDC operational page at the address http://support.lu.se.
