What is the name of my computer?

Sooner or later you will find yourself in the situation where you are trying to find out what your computer is named. Examples of such situations are when you are trying to connect with Remote Desktop from home or when calling LTH Support.

The easy way

  1. Open an Explorer window (Hold down the windows-key and hit the E-key)
  2. Right-click “This PC” and select “Properties”
  3. You are now presented with a window where you can find your computers name.

More info

ASCIIA computer name is typically made up by a number found on the security marker. The computer is always marked with a special security marker on a theft protection label as shown in the pictures. The exact location might vary but the label should always be clearly visible.

The marker contains LU followed by a six digit number. The six digit number is typically used in the computer name.

When connecting to your computer using Remote Desktop you need to enter the full name of your computer which is more than just the computer name. To get the full name, you use the computer name directly followed by a suffix.

The other digits found on the security label (202100 3211) is the organisational number of Lund University. It is always present on all security markers, but it is unrelated to the computer name.

LTH Faculty Office

At the LTH Faculty Office, the computer name consists of the prefix klth, immediately followed by the six digits.. If the six digits in the security marker are 123456, the computer name would be:

klth123456

The full name of the computer, which should be used with Remote Desktop, is the computer name followed by the suffix .kansli.lth.se. In this example, the full name would thus be:

klth123456.kansli.lth.se

Faculty of Science Faculty Office

At the Faculty of Science Faculty Office, the computer name consists of the prefix kn, immediately followed by the six digits.. If the six digits in the security marker are 123456, the computer name would be:

kn123456

The full name of the computer, which should be used with Remote Desktop, is the computer name followed by the suffix .kanslimn.lu.se. In this example, the full name would thus be:

kn123456.kanslimn.lu.se

EIT

At EIT, the computer name is always clearly marked on a separate label on the computer, and the security marker number is not used. The full name of the computer, which should be used with Remote Desktop, is the computer name followed by the suffix .eit.lth.se. If the computer name is COMPUTERNAME, the full name would thus be:

computername.eit.lth.se
